Jake Silby: In search of

Jake Silby is a 23-year-old photographer who is originally from New Plymouth, New Zealand. He received a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Photography, from Massey University in 2014. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, where he continues to develop his practice. Jake is interested in individual perceptions of place and landscape, and the shifting roles that photography plays in our everyday lives.

In search of: Following the completion of an undergraduate degree in Photography in 2014, I felt utterly perplexed. I had created a series of projects not representative of my interests as a photographer, but that instead adhered to the prescribed briefs and whims of those around me. ‘In search of’ removes the constant questioning and contemplation of the work I am generating, instead focusing simply on what visual subject matter interests me. The production of this body of work liberated me from what I perceived to be, at times, a claustrophobic environment. It also functioned as a catalyst, allowing myself to re-discover the fervor towards photography I thought I had lost.
